Missing Cost Basis: The Data Problem Crypto Tax Software Cannot Solve for You

Accountant reviewing financial documents with a calculator to reconstruct missing crypto cost basis records

Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction; this article is about record integrity, not a personal tax position.

A disposal in 2026 may depend on a purchase made years earlier. If the software sees the sale but not the acquisition, it cannot calculate from evidence that is absent.

Koinly documents that it may use a zero cost basis when purchase history is missing. CoinTracker says insufficient quantity can likewise produce a zero-cost assumption. In both cases, zero can mean “the record does not prove a cost,” not “the asset was acquired for free.”

Cost basis is a chain, not a field beside the sale

Cost basis is derived from acquisition history and the selected accounting settings. If the basis is wrong because an acquisition or transfer is missing, correct the source history rather than forcing the disposal to match the number you expect. Some software may allow direct basis edits for particular transaction categories, so any manual override must still be supported by source records and the applicable tax method.

That chain can cross years, exchanges and self-custody wallets:

  1. Asset purchased on an exchange.
  2. Moved to a hardware wallet.
  3. Bridged or wrapped.
  4. Returned to another exchange.
  5. Sold.

Every step can be present while the first one is missing. The final sale then looks unsupported even though today’s balance was correct before disposal.

The five most common breaks

A missing old account. The exchange or wallet where the acquisition occurred was never added because it is no longer used.

An incomplete export window. A CSV begins after the purchase date, or an API does not expose a discontinued product.

An unmatched transfer. Movement between owned wallets is treated as an outgoing event and a separate incoming event, severing history.

A wrong asset identity. A bridged or wrapped token is mapped incorrectly, or two contracts with the same symbol are treated as one asset.

A manual opening balance. Quantity was inserted to make the dashboard agree, without acquisition date and value evidence.

Find the first unsupported quantity

Do not start at the sale and guess a cost. Trace backward.

  1. Open the disposal with missing basis.
  2. Identify the exact asset, network, quantity and account.
  3. Trace transfers back through every owned wallet.
  4. Find the earliest receive for which no matching acquisition or incoming transfer exists.
  5. Recover evidence from exchange statements, original CSV files, blockchain transactions, trade confirmations or accounting records.
  6. Import or correct the source transaction, then recalculate the entire chain.

If the history cannot be recovered, preserve the uncertainty and obtain jurisdiction-specific professional advice. Do not manufacture a purchase price because it feels reasonable.

Why “the wallet balance matches” does not clear the error

A current balance tests quantity, not historical value. You can know with certainty that a wallet held 2 ETH and still lack evidence of what those 2 ETH cost.

Likewise, a market-price feed can value the asset today without proving its acquisition value years earlier. The tracker is performing two different calculations.

Keep source records outside the software

Tracker accounts change, integrations break and exchanges close. Retain original exports, monthly or annual statements, transaction hashes, trade confirmations and notes for manual corrections. CoinTracker’s current guidance for exchange shutdowns or API loss recommends downloading complete transaction history before making changes and using CSV records when API access is no longer available.

A normalized export from the tracker is useful, but it should not replace the original evidence used to build it.

Use the pre-report transaction audit to check the whole ledger. If quantities are already wrong, start with the portfolio-balance diagnostic. The broader limitation is explained in what trackers cannot infer.
