Cheapest Crypto Exchange: Measure the Full Round Trip

Fee schedules, regional products and promotional rates change. This comparison uses current official disclosures and does not claim live account quotes or identical availability in every jurisdiction.

Cryptophia Research has an existing Binance referral relationship used elsewhere; official exchange links in the source section are evidence citations only. Commercial relationships do not determine the methodology or conclusion.

Verdict: there is no defensible permanent “cheapest crypto exchange.” The lowest-cost route is the one that leaves the most value after funding, FX, spread, maker/taker execution, slippage, crypto withdrawal and cash-out are measured for the same user, pair, size, timestamp and destination. Brand fee tables are inputs to that test, not the conclusion.

The cheapest crypto exchange is transaction-specific. Measure the same country, legal entity, cash amount, payment method, trading pair, order type, timestamp and withdrawal destination. A lower published trading fee can still lose after card charges, spread, currency conversion, poor liquidity and crypto withdrawal cost are added.

Cheapest crypto exchanges: compare routes, not brands

RouteMeasureCommon hidden cost
Bank-funded advanced spotDeposit cost + maker/taker execution + slippage + withdrawalA low trading fee can be offset by weak depth or an expensive exit
Instant or simple buyCash paid versus market value of crypto receivedSpread and payment-processor cost can be larger than the displayed fee
Subscription discountSubscription + residual spread/fees divided across actual monthly volumeA waived line item may not offset the subscription or spread
On-chain / DEX routeBridge/on-ramp + gas + swap price impact + approval/MEV + off-rampThere may be no overlapping bank route, so the comparison can be incomplete

Shortlist exchanges only after confirming the actual local entity and route. Then capture live quotes from the same timestamp. A fee page is evidence about one component; the worksheet below is the comparison.

Which crypto exchange has the lowest fees overall?

No exchange earns that title without a route, jurisdiction and timestamp. The correct comparison holds the user and transaction constant, then asks which venue delivers the highest net value at the end of the complete path.

A defensible test must record:

  • jurisdiction and legal entity;
  • funding currency and method;
  • asset and trading pair;
  • maker or taker execution;
  • trade size and executable liquidity;
  • cash or crypto exit;
  • comparison timestamp and captured quote.

If one of those fields changes, the ranking is a different experiment.

The seven costs that belong in the comparison

1. Funding fee

Bank transfers can be free or low-cost while cards and third-party on-ramps can charge several percentage points. The fastest method is often not the cheapest.

2. Currency conversion

A user with SGD, GBP or EUR may need to convert into USD or a stablecoin before buying the intended asset. FX and conversion spreads can erase a small trading-fee advantage.

3. Retail spread

A simple-buy quote can include a price spread in addition to an explicit fee. Coinbase documents that simple buys and conversions include a spread, while Coinbase Advanced interacts with the order book without an included spread.

4. Maker or taker trading fee

A maker order rests on the order book and adds liquidity. A taker order executes immediately against existing liquidity. Maker fees are often lower, but a non-marketable limit order may never fill.

5. Slippage and market impact

A low fee on an illiquid pair can produce a worse final price. Market orders and large orders consume available order-book depth.

6. Crypto withdrawal fee

Exchanges can charge a network-related or platform-set withdrawal fee. The same asset can have several networks with different costs and recovery risks.

7. Cash withdrawal and time cost

Bank cash-out fees, minimums and processing times matter. A withdrawal hold can make a nominally cheap route unsuitable for immediate self-custody.

The full-cost formula

For a cash-to-wallet purchase:

Effective cost = cash paid − market value of crypto arriving in the external wallet

For a sell-and-cash-out route:

Effective cost = market value of crypto sold − cash arriving in the bank

Use the same independent reference price at the same timestamp. Report the difference in both currency and percentage terms.

Who is cheaper than Coinbase?

A competing venue is cheaper only when the complete comparable route leaves more value after funding, execution and exit. Compare Coinbase simple trade with Coinbase Advanced first, then compare the relevant order-book route with the competing venue using the same cash amount, pair, order type, timestamp and external destination.

Do not answer this question from a permanent brand ranking. Capture the live quote and record the result in the reproducible worksheet.

What is the cheapest way to buy Bitcoin?

For many users, the cheapest repeatable route is:

  1. use a free or low-cost bank transfer;
  2. trade a liquid local-fiat or USD pair on the order book;
  3. use a limit order when fill risk is acceptable;
  4. avoid an unnecessary fiat-to-stablecoin conversion;
  5. withdraw in sensible batches after verifying the address and network.

A card-funded instant purchase is convenient but often more expensive. A separate Bitcoin-only venue may be cheaper in one country, but this guide does not make a universal claim without live regional quotes.

Cheapest exchange for selling crypto

The lowest selling cost depends on order-book depth, cash withdrawal and tax records. Measure:

  • net cash after the sale;
  • maker/taker fee;
  • spread and slippage;
  • stablecoin or FX conversion;
  • bank withdrawal fee and time;
  • the ability to document cost basis.

An exchange with a low sell fee but no efficient bank route is not the cheapest cash-out venue.

Cheapest crypto transfer between exchanges

The cheapest transfer asset is not always the safest operational choice. Converting Bitcoin or Ethereum into a lower-fee asset can create two extra trades, price risk, tax consequences and destination-support risk.

Prefer the asset and network that both exchanges explicitly support. Compare:

  • conversion fees and spread;
  • withdrawal fee;
  • network finality;
  • deposit minimum and confirmations;
  • conversion back at the destination;
  • tax and record consequences.

Do not send on a cheap network merely because the address format appears valid.

Do decentralised exchanges have lower fees?

A DEX can be cheaper for an on-chain user trading a liquid pair, especially on a low-cost network or aggregator route. It can also be more expensive after gas, bridge fees, price impact, MEV, failed transactions and token approvals are counted.

A DEX does not provide a bank deposit or cash withdrawal. Compare it only for the portion of the route that actually overlaps with a centralised exchange.

Are zero-fee exchanges really free?

Zero can refer to one line item:

  • zero maker fee;
  • zero fee on selected pairs;
  • zero simple-trade fee under a subscription;
  • zero commission with spread in the quote;
  • a temporary promotion.

Always record the final asset quantity and a neutral market reference. A zero explicit fee can coexist with a worse price.

How to reduce crypto exchange fees

  • Use bank transfer instead of card where appropriate.
  • Use the order-book or advanced interface rather than simple buy.
  • Choose a liquid pair.
  • Use a limit order when fill risk is acceptable.
  • Avoid unnecessary fiat and stablecoin conversions.
  • Review volume or asset-based fee tiers.
  • Evaluate subscription discounts against the subscription cost.
  • Batch crypto withdrawals without creating excessive custody exposure.
  • Use the correct supported network.
  • Recheck promotions and pair-specific rates before trading.

Capture quotes inside a narrow time window and repeat the test. One observation can reveal a bad route but cannot prove a permanent ranking.

Worked example: why the winner reverses

Exchange A has a 0.02% taker fee but requires a paid card purchase and charges a larger Bitcoin withdrawal. Exchange B has a 0.40% maker fee, free bank funding, a liquid BTC/USD pair and a low-cost cash withdrawal. A may win for an urgent small buy; B may deliver more Bitcoin for a recurring bank-funded route.

For a larger order, order-book depth and slippage can reverse the result again. Always publish the size beside a cheapest claim.

Security and switching cost

Opening another exchange creates identity-verification work, another bank connection, another record source and another account that can be phished or restricted. A marginal fee saving may not justify the operational cost.

Set a materiality rule: add an exchange only when the expected recurring savings, asset access or banking advantage clearly exceeds the cost and risk of maintaining another account.

Crypto exchange fees and taxes

Trading, withdrawal and gas fees can affect proceeds, cost basis or deductible expenses depending on the jurisdiction and transaction. Preserve:

  • order confirmation;
  • fee asset and amount;
  • bank deposit and withdrawal records;
  • crypto withdrawal transaction hash;
  • FX and conversion records;
  • subscription fees used for the activity.

Do not assume the exchange tax export captures every off-platform fee or wallet transfer.

Final verdict

Binance.US currently publishes a very low Advanced spot fee schedule for eligible US users, but that does not make it the permanent cheapest complete route. For Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Binance and other eligible venues, the winner should be determined by the same-route worksheet: local legal entity, funding method, order type, executable price, withdrawal cost, hold time and final destination measured at the same timestamp.

The cheapest crypto exchange is the one that delivers the most correctly purchased and withdrawable crypto—or the most cash to the bank—after every fee, spread, conversion, hold and exit cost is counted.

Use the broader crypto exchange fee audit, separate spread from trading fee, and learn how order choice changes execution.
